REPORT On Sunday 25th November the fifth ‘Martial Arts Fighting Cancer’ event took place in support of The Teenage Cancer Trust at . The usual format was followed of inviting Top class martial arts instructors to teach seminars and then selling tickets to martial artists from around the Northwest and beyond. Our guest instructors this time were Kru Tony Moore who was British, European and Hong Kong Champion of Champions in Thai Boxing and he retired undefeated in Championship bouts. Tony’s knowledge of Thai tradition and language and their relationship to Muay Thai was fascinating. However when it came to work, the pace was beyond me. The basics of the devastating style of Muay Thai were taught from guard, punch, elbow, knee and kick, it was a brilliant session. In the afternoon Chris Brown and Richard Wilde from Oldham Bull Dog Academy taught Jeet Kuhe Do grappling skills. Chris has trained constantly for twenty years with the top Jeet Kune Do and Brazilian Ju Jitsu instructors and it showed, Richard was actually one of the youngest Shotokan Karate Black Belts in the country twenty years ago and has trained in many styles since. Instructor Alastair Hall , Sifu Dave McKeown and myself all took a short session to make up a compilation seminar. Kru Tony is also a Gold Sash 9th degree Instructor of Krabi Krabong the highest ranked instructor in the world outside Thailand, at lunchtime his display team did a fantastic sword display that was scary to watch never mind take part in. Also at lunch time we had a self defence display from Protea Kickboxing, a weapons display from Sifu Dave McKeown , sparring from some of Shuko Karate’s kids, and Protea’s fighters and finally as part of my 4th Dan qualification, I had a Full Contact fight between myself and Sensie Steve Fenwick. The first section was even, but as the time past my lack of fitness started to tell and the last thirty seconds was a bit ragged, within the last two seconds Steve hit me with a crushing low kick that made me collapse and unfortunately I sprained my ankle badly. Steve went on to fight one of his own fighters and also ended in casualty with a cut eye. It’s all worth it for charity though and our motto is ‘You think your tough - try fighting cancer‘. Our events are on Youtube.com under ‘Martial Arts Fighting Cancer’ and this years event will be uploaded in the next week or two. Including last Sundays event we have raised £10,000 for cancer charities, this year my own company www.dragonflygarden.co.uk took on a sponsorship role after AstraZeneca’s five years of support was cancelled. We are delighted to say Henshaw Waste management also added their support to our event. Protea Kickboxing train at Congleton Leisure Centre Thursday night 7.30pm. We train at Prestbury village hall at 8.00pm on Mondays, if you are a person of mature years who used to train in martial arts and wish to get back into training to keep fit and have fun, please get in touch through our web site at www.shukokarate.com or on 01625 501431. Tournament Sunday 30th April, 2006 Yesterday's event was a brilliant day, mainly because we went as a team and fought with the full support of the group as a whole, which is such a help when entering competitions - particularly for the first time. The first to fight was Charlotte Tilley, it was Charlotte's first fight and at the age of six she was very brave to enter. There were signs that Charlotte didn't know quite what to do, which is not surprising as it is a strange thing to be told to go and kick someone who has done nothing wrong. Charlotte did however start to get the hang of it and managed to score a good leading hand punch, she then landed a head round house, probably the only one in her section, but unfortunately was judged to have landed on the back of the neck which is not a scoring area, she eventually lost 4 points to 2, but well done. Next up was Brooke Weir who fought really well pushing her opponent through the whole fight, she was up against an experienced little fighter from Brian Nelson's camp who had shown outstanding technique whilst warming up on the mat. Brooke scored two or three times and lost three points on a split decision, so it was a very close run fight it and it eventually finished 4 points to 3. Her opponent went on to the final where he went to extra time and lost by one point. Next up were the adults, Matt Harrison once again was in his first fight and fought an eventual finals with good spirit, he found it hard to get his techniques flowing with out any warm up fights, which is one of the skills necessary for competitions and comes with practice, but even so he fought bravely and picked up a point against one of the Patel family who entered three family members and fight for our friend and Martial Arts Fighting Cancer instructors, Jamie Goulding. Next was Simon Weir, well what can I say, he was fighting one of Brian Nelson's group and fought really well, it went to a 3-6 score line against Simon and at that point I shouted head kicks and with in two seconds, Simon scored with a head roundhouse taking it to 5-6, then with one second left on the clock Simon scored with a second head roundhouse taking him to a winning score line of 7-6. I was getting a bit of attention because I was so excited with Simon's performance - fantastic. He next fought one of the Patel family and you could tell the energy levels were dropping and he eventually lost 6-4. Immediately he was back up to fight for third place and he was tired out, he struggled to keep going but with a bit of encouragement he did do really well and when 3-5 down he seemed to score a head kick taking it to 5-5, but the shot was judged to be on the glove and with only a few seconds left it finished 3-5, but well done. Finally, Chris Allies took to the mat, fighting one of the Patel brothers. He was sharp and aggressive, but tactically his lack of experience did show against his talented opponent. Through out the fight Chris scored points, but his adversary gradually pulled away and the scores ended up 3-7. Again I am very proud of Chris's performance, because the three brothers are a commited family and obviously take their training seriously and our fighters scored points and certainly caused problems, but I must add our congratulations to the Patel brothers who won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the category. Finally, I would like to thank Sensei Joe Tierney for inviting us to take part and as he said on the day, every one wants to win, but taking part is a victory in its self, to win trophies is a bonus. I would like to make a personal comment, that I do not like to see fighters running away towards the end of a fight when they are a head on points, they should be there to fight and I was glad to see a couple of fighters misjudge their negative strategy and lose their fights. I personally think this negative gamesmanship should be stopped by the sanction of disqualification - but that is just my point of view and possibly naive. |

Finally - Georgie
Matiaha took over the session, Georgie is a New Zealand Mauri and has
the genetic natural size and power which combined with twenty five years
of boxing experience, in which he fought for New Zealnd several times,
is a bit unnerving, but luckily he is one of the most technical fighting
instructors I have trained with. Once again I made an incorrect assumption
that boxers just got in the ring and hit each other, where as in reality
the word art is as applicable to boxing as any other martial art. Thanks to the attending clubs and of course to this years guest instructors. It was a great day. |
